As PR professionals it is our job to guide our clients into the future. PR is not just about selling a product, it never has been. It's about helping our clients create change in their organisation and their industry, as well as prospering in their business. It is about helping them to understand the importance of engaging with stakeholders and building relationships that last. With our knowledge and expertise, our job is to guide the communications around the ecosystem in which they operate.

We work in an exciting industry where effective communication is the key to success. If an organisation is committed to surviving and prospering in this economic environment, communication should be its number one goal. This is where social media comes in.

Social media is taking Australia and New Zealand, along with the rest of the world, by storm. According to Catalyst90, New Zealand has over 2 million registered Facebook accounts, over 56,000 active Twitter accounts and over 420,000 registered LinkedIn accounts. Australia has over 2.2 million LinkedIn accounts, 1.2 million Twitter accounts and approximately 10.4 million Facebook accounts.

But, what are these people saying? Who are they talking about? Which brands do they trust, and which ones do they shy away from? How many people are they sharing their stories with and how many brands are they advocating?

Paul Gillin, author of The New Influencers, rightly says, "Conventional marketing wisdom long held that a dissatisfied customer tells ten people. But... in the new age of social media, he or she has the tools to tell ten million." The impact of social media on public relations is huge.

What gets me up in the morning? It's knowing that today I will learn more about the tools that are available to me, so that I am equipped to help our clients make a change for their future prosperity. This includes both traditional PR and the growing role of social media.
